What Drew Me to This Movie:
When it comes to musical movies that combine perfect cast, great story, and beautiful songs, I believe John Carney is the man that you can count on. His previous works, Once and Begin Again, are simply the reason why I confidently say that (if you haven’t watched them, I highly recommend you start now! – you can thank me later).
And Then:
Three words: enjoyable to watch. Sing Street is a coming-of-age drama that centers on a 15-year-old named Conor. At such tender age, he already has a handful of situations – including being transferred to a rough public school (bullies!) and watching his parents’ marriage fall apart among others. Things are difficult, yet thankfully becoming less painful as Conor embraces his musical talent with the help of his cool older brother, Brendan, and forms a band in hopes of getting his crush, the attractive Raphina (a.k.a. the mysterious girl standing in front of his school), to like him. Through it all, we get to see Conor’s transformation from a quiet shy schoolboy to a man who is unafraid to pour his heart out into his music.
The story is nothing new, but delivered in such entertaining way that I guarantee you as a viewer will be so into this and won’t get distracted at all. Songs featured in Sing Street, both original tracks and well-known hits from the ‘80s (Duran Duran or The Cure, anyone?), are awesome and perfectly capture the happy sad moments.
As for the ensemble cast, lovely selection! Ferdia Walsh-Peelo shines in his movie debut as Conor. The actor/singer plays against Lucy Boynton of Miss Potter and Jack Reynor of Macbeth, who give equally strong performances as Raphina and Brendan respectively.
All in All:
Grab your popcorn and buy Sing Street movie ticket right away, friends. Or rent it if this movie is no longer available in theaters. You won’t be sorry. FYI: I have watched it three times already.
